Visual Studio Code, developed by Microsoft, is a free, open-source code editor that now integrates AI agents directly into the editing experience. Developers can hand off tasks to AI agents that autonomously plan changes, edit code, run commands, and iterate, alongside inline AI suggestions and intelligent code completions. VS Code supports a huge range of programming languages, includes an integrated terminal, debugger, version control, and build tasks, and is extensible through more than 80,000 marketplace extensions plus Model Context Protocol servers. It runs cross-platform on desktop and in the browser via vscode.dev, with remote development and GitHub Codespaces integration, settings sync, and accessibility features.
