Codeium

Codeium was the original name of an AI coding assistant — a free code-completion and chat plugin for over 70 programming languages and dozens of IDEs — built by the company of the same name. In November 2024 the company launched a standalone AI-native code editor called Windsurf, and by April 2025 it had renamed itself Windsurf too, shifting focus from an IDE plugin toward a full agentic editor built around "Cascade," its multi-step AI coding agent. Windsurf's independence was short-lived: after a reported attempt by OpenAI to acquire the company collapsed, Google licensed the founding team and core technology in July 2025, and days later Cognition AI — maker of the autonomous coding agent Devin — acquired the remaining company and product. Cognition continued developing the editor, and on June 2, 2026 renamed it again, to Devin Desktop, rolled out to existing users as a standard update; the JetBrains plugin, however, still ships under the Windsurf name. Devin Desktop today is positioned as a command center for running multiple coding agents — local and cloud-based — from inside a full IDE. It retains editor fundamentals like syntax highlighting and debugging, an AI code-prediction feature called Supercomplete, and Fast Context for codebase navigation, while adding an Agent Command Center with Kanban-style tracking of agent tasks, shared-context "Spaces" backed by git worktrees, the Agent Client Protocol (ACP) for using different models and agents, and integrations with tools like Slack, Linear, and Figma. It offers free, unlimited access to SWE-1.6, an in-house coding model. For anyone who remembers this entry by its old name: the free, lightweight "AI autocomplete for 70+ languages" positioning that made Codeium popular no longer reflects the current product. It has evolved into a considerably more complex, agent-centric tool aimed at developers comfortable managing multiple AI coding agents at once, rather than users who just want simple inline completions — a real shift in scope worth knowing before treating this as a lightweight, no-frills option. Legacy Windsurf subscribers were grandfathered onto unchanged plans through the rename.
